1972 - 1979
By the end of spring training of 1972, Nolan's first with the California Angels, he had serious doubts about his future in baseball. The California press criticized the trade bringing an unproven pitcher for Jim Fregosi, a proven hitter. A bad spring training had Nolan concerned he had blown a fresh start with his new team. Due to the baseball strike, Nolan and wife Ruth had nearly depleted their bank account.
For the second time in his brief career, Nolan entertained thoughts of walking away from baseball. Again Ruth convinced him to stick it out. Nolan wound up taking out a loan from a bank in Alvin, putting his 1971 income tax return up as collateral.
